Overview

Discover the raw beauty and adventure of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley with Mt. Longonot day hike, a haven for hikers and nature lovers. This dormant stratovolcano, last active thousands of years ago, stands proudly at 2,776 m (9,108 ft) above sea level. Its name comes from the Masai word Oloonong’ot, meaning “mountain of steep ridges.” The climb rewards you with sweeping views of the Rift Valley floor, the jagged crater rim, and the glistening waters of Lake Naivasha in the distance.

Itinerary

Your Mt Longonot day trip begins with a pick up early from your hotel or residence in Nairobi by your professional driver-guide. After a short briefing, begin your scenic journey northwest along the Nairobi–Naivasha Highway, descending into the Great Rift Valley. Make a brief stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint, one of Kenya’s most photographed spots, to enjoy panoramic vistas and capture sunrise photos over the escarpment before continuing to Mt. Longonot National Park.
Arrive at Mt longonot main gate, Your guide will give a short briefing on the hiking trail, safety tips and what to expect during the climb. The hike begins at roughly 2,150 m above sea level, through an open savannah dotted with acacia trees. The lower slopes are covered in hardy shrubs and lava rocks, a reminder of the mountain’s volcanic origin.
The trail becomes steeper as you near the crater rim, rewarding you with breathtaking views of the crater floor, a lush green bowl formed by centuries of natural regeneration. You’ll also see the surrounding Rift Valley escarpments, farms, and Lake Naivasha shimmering in the distance. The climb to the rim typically takes around 2 hours depending on pace. At the top, you’ll have a chance to rest, enjoy the cool breeze, and take stunning photographs. For the adventurous, you may choose to walk around the crater rim, a roughly 7 km circuit that offers changing perspectives of the crater and the surrounding valley. This section is moderately challenging, with a few steep sections, but the panoramic views make it well worth the effort. If you prefer, you can relax at a viewpoint and soak in the scenery before descending.
Begin your descent back to the park gate. Drive a short distance to a nearby restaurant for lunch. After lunch, begin your return journey to Nairobi. The drive offers one last look at the dramatic Rift Valley landscapes.
Expected to arrive in Nairobi in the early evening and be dropped off at your hotel. This marks the end of your Mt. Longonot day hike.
